OUR PARTNERSHIP

Brave Christians working together for a more just society

The Association for a More Just Society (which uses its Spanish initials ASJ) is a non-profit organization of brave Christians working to create a more just society in Honduras and around the globe. Since its founding over 20 years ago, ASJ has promoted peace and justice in Honduras by advocating for government systems that work for the most vulnerable members of society.

ASJ’s work is done through three organizations:

  • ASJ-Honduras, which leads groundbreaking justice initiatives in Honduras.
  • ASJ-US, which supports the work in Honduras and shares this vision of transformation with people around the world.
  • ASJ-Canada, which supports the work in Honduras and seeks solidarity with and justice for marginalized communities.

Together through mutual support and a shared identity, the three organizations form one movement dedicated to justice in Honduras.

Our Story

Our work for justice in Honduras first began in 1998 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, when a group of Honduran and North American friends developed a vision for justice. After years of working in community development, our founders realized that their initiatives were failing to have a lasting impact. Too many laws, policies, and systems in Honduras did not respect the needs and rights of the poor.

If social change was going to be possible in Honduras, our founders realized that we need to be working for justice. It was out of this vision that La Asociación Para Una Sociedad Más Justa, known as ASJ in Spanish, was born.

As ASJ’s work for justice got off the ground in Honduras, we found that there were people from around the globe who wanted to partner with us. Two years later in 2000, we opened a U.S.-based sister organization to join ASJ in doing justice in Honduras (ASJ-US). In the years to come, a group of Canadians formed ASJ-Canada to continue to amplify our collective mission.

To this day, partnership with Honduras remains a core part of our work. Not only was our work born in Honduras, but our movement for justice continues to be led by Honduran leaders. Together, we are working for a more just society

How We Work Together

In the years since our organization began, our movement for justice has grown. From our early days of protecting land rights and advocating for just labor practices, to our recent accomplishments in violence prevention and reforming key government institutions, we have become key players in building a more just society — not only in Honduras, but also globally.

We share a commitment to being brave Christians dedicated to doing justice, and we work closely together in many ways including fundraising to sustain programs in Honduras, advocacy initiatives, and justice education campaigns. Through our partnership, we work together to inspire and equip justice-seekers around the world.

The work of ASJ is financed through ASJ-US's direct fundraising, as well as commitments from 20 other institutional funders who help to finance the work in Honduras. To learn more about ASJ-US's finances, visit our Financials page.
